How to Remove Skunk Smell

The scientific formula of how to remove skunk smell and odor was originally developed by Paul Krebaum. Due to the complexities of packaging and distributing the potential product, Krebaum dediced against patenting his formula and placed it in the public domain. The formula is very simple and can be made with household items. It is safe for pets and most clothing.

The Skunk Odor Removal Formula:

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (found at your local drug store)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 1 teaspoon liquid soap (or dish detergent)

Mix together and apply immediately to the subject. Leave the solution on for about 5 minutes or until the smell is gone and rinse. Some subjects may require you to rinse and repeat. This remedy works great to remove the skunk smell on a dog.

When using Krebaum's formula, normal bathing procedures should be used to protect the eyes. If the spray has hit the eyes, flush with water as soon as possible, as it can cause temporary blindness. After lathering the subject with Krebaum's formula, be sure to rinse the subject well with plain water.

In Krebaum's formula, the soap functions to disperse and break up the oils in the skunk spray. This then allows the other ingredients to neutralize the thiols in the skunk spray. If you can't find hydrogen peroxide, then a 2% vinegar solution can help.

Do NOT try to save the formula in a container, it will explode and make a giant mess.
